This is a new publication that is offered by Mullett-Smith Press relating the last works by Suzanne Mullett Smith in an effort to clarify concepts often misunderstood in her often borrowed thesis on Dove written for her MA in 1943-4. She also wanted to record her memories of her times with Arthur Dove, Alfred Steiglitz, Georgia O'Keefe, and Duncan Phillips while she worked on her masters thesis.
Anyone considering purchasing a painting or drawing by Arthur Dove should certainly look up the work in Suzanne Mullett Smith's catalog of Dove paintings. Unless the purchase is of a work done while he was in France before he had his first exhibition in the Steiglitz show, all the authentic paintings by Arthur Dove are recorded in this catalog. Anyone claiming to have a painting for sale that is not in the catalog is probably selling a fake. The catalog is at the American Art Archives in Washington, DC. There is a microfilm of this catalog available from University Press along with Mrs. Smith's original Thesis, with the addition of her correspondences with Arthur Dove and Alfred Steiglitz. Buyer beware. As Dove paintings become more popular and valuable, the chance of buying a fake become more possible.
